New Venture Creation: A practical guide on how to set up a new company 18-20 November 2015
This residential course aims to equip knowledge transfer professionals to:
• Be aware of the reasons why academic, NHS and related institutions create companies
• Build an opportunity, including how to leverage IP (including patents, trademarks, copyright, design rights, know-how), capitalise on founder reputation, build a team and demonstrate market opportunity
• Scrutinise a business plan and ensure that it is realistic, implementable and suitably ambitious
• Pitch the opportunity and attract finance from a variety of sources
• Understand the key documents and agreements relating to new venture formation, including heads of terms, shareholder’s agreements and articles of association
• Understand the basics of company valuation
• Build the management team, understand the role and value of the board and key issues of corporate governance
• Be aware of what can go wrong (and how to try to avoid it)
• Support a new venture post incorporation
This course covers core content utilising a mix of presentation, discussion and case study work to ensure that key learning can be applied on the job. Trainers are leading practitioners in the field and bring to the course their own in depth experiences.
Who should attend?
This advanced level course is aimed at those with a at least eighteen month’s experience in technology transfer or a related field (academic, public sector research, the NHS or related organisation) who have either had direct experience of company formation or attended Fundamentals of New Venture Creation – when to start a company. A working knowledge of contracts and IP management will be assumed.
The course fee includes:
• Attendance at all lectures and workshops
• Training and reference materials (electronic or otherwise)

• Morning and afternoon coffee/tea, refreshments and lunch on both days
Venue
The course and accommodation will be held at Burleigh Court which is located on the Loughborough University campus (West Entrance). Loughborough railway station is three miles away - taxis are available at the station or there is a regular shuttle bus every 20 minutes from the station to the venue. If you are driving, Burleigh Court is one mile from junction 23 on the M1; ample free secure on-site car parking is available. Nottingham East Midlands Airport is just eight miles away.
Accommodation
The course fee does not include accommodation. This is charged separately at the discounted rate of £82.00 per night, on a bed and breakfast basis at the venue itself. If you request accommodation on your registration form, PraxisUnico will book this for you on your behalf and the cost will be included on your invoice. Please note that the course begins with registration at 18.30 on Wednesday 18 November.
