PraxisAuril response to NIHR consultation on revenue sharing policy (Dec 23)

In late 2023, the National Institute of Health and Social Care Research (NIHR) convened a stakeholder consultation on its proposed new revenue sharing policy, which applies to funding recipients that commercially exploit NIHR funded IP and data.  The aim of this consultation was to:

1.     Raise awareness of the new policy and promote transparency among key stakeholders

2.     Obtain feedback that may be used to understand concerns and areas where additional guidance is required.

The NIHR’s approach to this stakeholder consultation was to ask “umbrella” organisations, able to speak for and engage with specific stakeholder groups, to act as a single point of coordination and feedback. In recognition of the role of PraxisAuril plays in relation to university technology transfer offices (TTO's), we were invited to provide coordination and feedback in respect of that group.

Tamsin Mann, Head of Policy & Governance, engaged directly witht the NIHR to understand the context and purpose of the new policy before convening a discussion with PrA members to hear their perspective and reaction to the proposals. PrA's response can be downloaded here.

The NIHR proposals were not well received by PrA members, particularly in the context of the recent Independent Review of University Spinouts, and a second phase of consultation is taking place with a number of TTOs and staff within Biomedical Research Centres (BRCs).
